Wrinkled carpet can also cause other problems such as delamination, permanent creases, and premature wear. It is important to fix the wrinkles as soon as possible to minimize the damage.

What causes carpet to develop wrinkles?

There are several potential causes. Carpet is a fabric, so it is affected by the same things that affect all fabrics. And wrinkles are caused by there being more material than fits in the space. But the potential reasons in rough order of likelihood are:
  • Carpet was not stretched tight enough initially.
  • Damage from dragging heavy furniture.
  • Rolling damage from heavy carts or electric wheelchairs
  • Overwetting when cleaned.
  • Flooding.
  • Age.
  • Product defect.
  • Other.

What Do I Need to Do?

The simple part. Call a professional installer and have them restretch the carpet. If the carpet is within the original installer's warranty, it may not cost you anything. Pelletier Rug Co., Inc. covers for 5 years from date of installation. If it is outside warranty or we did not install the carpet, then there is a charge for restretching a carpet which will depend on how many rooms, amount of furniture, etc. The installer will stretch the carpet and cut out any excess material that has developed so your carpet will be tight and beautiful again.
